Preface

When I resigned from my job last year, I sent an email to notify friends and family that included the following: “So, what does the future hold for me?… To be honest, I don't know….I've always had a plan and now I'm left with a future full of questions. However, I'm allowing myself to be open to the adventure that this next phase of my life may hold - which is both terrifying and exciting.”

These past few months were a whirlwind as I attempted to move forward with just that.  Through the ups and downs of soul-searching and introspection, my next step became clear. I have accepted an invitation from the Peace Corps to serve as a Community Health Educator in Cameroon! For those of you a little rusty on your global geography, Cameroon is on the western coast of central Africa. The more I’ve learned about the country, the more I’m convinced that it is a good fit and a tremendous opportunity for me.

I’ve decided to keep this blog chronicling my African adventure, and I hope you’ll find it to be a good way to learn about an unfamiliar place while staying updated on my journey. While I’m presently unsure about the frequency of my ability to communicate, I’ll be as diligent as possible.

In two weeks, I’ll head to Orientation stateside with other Health (and Agricultural) volunteers. Together, we’ll board a plane and be on our way to our new home for 27 months. We’ll have 11 weeks of Pre-Service Training, receiving intensive technical, language and cross-cultural instruction and experiential learning, before beginning our two years of service.

I am indebted to the family and friends who have encouraged, advised, and supported me in this decision. I’m grateful for the chances I’ve had to personally say goodbye to many of you, and hope that we’ll be able to remain in contact throughout my absence. For now, I’ll end with a quote that has been a personal mantra recently, and which is sure to mark my future experience.

"Life is known only by those who have found a way to be comfortable with change and the unknown. Given the nature of life, there may be no security, but only adventure." ~Rachel Naomi Remen
